The Turks and Caicos are known for their beaches, and have a reputation as being some of the most beautiful in the world. There are over 200 miles of powdered sugar beaches and the local lore (endorsed by Turks and Caicos Tourism Officials) is that in 1962 John Glenn sighted the beaches from space and maneuvered his Mercury capsule to splash down in paradise.
